Why movement matters
Movement recommendations change as children grow.
World Health Organization guidance sets age-specific recommendations for physical activity throughout childhood.
Under 1 year
Several
times a day
WHO advises physical activity several times throughout the day. For infants who are not yet mobile, its guideline includes at least 30 minutes of tummy time accumulated while awake.1
Ages 1 to 4
180
min/day
For ages 1–2, WHO recommends at least 180 minutes of physical activity at any intensity across the day. For ages 3–4, the same daily total applies, with at least 60 minutes at moderate-to-vigorous intensity.1
Ages 5 to 17
60
min/day avg
WHO recommends an average of at least 60 minutes per day of moderate-to-vigorous, mostly aerobic physical activity across the week.2
These are World Health Organization public-health recommendations and are included to provide general context for regular movement in childhood. They do not imply WHO endorsement of Out of the Blocks. Out of the Blocks is an educational movement programme and does not replace individual medical or developmental advice.
